Within the framework of the project "Social Distancing and New Spatial Forms of Interaction" of the Berlin University Alliance (project management: René Tuma, Hubert Knoblauch, Uwe Flick), videographic recordings were produced by which the new spatial and interaction forms of "social distancing" were documented. The study collected focused ethnographic data across Germany for comparative analysis of relevant everyday situations in public spaces. The project comprises several regional sub-studies.
As part of a student research project in the Master of Sociology (supervised by Theresa Vollmer and René Tuma), videographic data were collected from March 21, 2020 to May 5, 2020 to document forms of interaction in public spaces during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic under infection control measures. The data collection period extends from the introduction of nationwide infection control measures and contact restrictions on March 22, 2020, to the relaxation of curfew restrictions, contact reductions, and reopening of retail and public facilities in May 2020. Focused video data were collected in Berlin and Düsseldorf from everyday interactions in public places, pedestrian malls, markets, shopping malls, and store entrances. The aim of the survey was to record and evaluate physical presence and the execution of interactions in public spaces in the context of infection control measures, in particular the distance rule ("social distancing"). The question of how distance is enacted in interactions in public space was investigated in order to examine distance as a context-dependent and situationally complex interactive performance with regard to visually observable physical, spatial and material aspects in the interaction situations.

dc.contributor.author: Birkner, Karin; Groß, Alexandra
dc.description.abstract: The pilot project analyses the micro-organization of the interaction at a dinner table. The data stems from recordings of naturally occurring conversations during meals among family and friends, with two participants wearing eye-tracking glasses.
At meal times, members of a community converge. Thus, family meals are a central encounter for social communion. Many other things get done at the same time: people exchange views on what has happened since they met last, they coordinate plans, debate about politics, educate children or chitchat about the neighbors, etc. At times, the meal becomes a side issue, but often the focus suddenly changes back to the food, e.g. if someone asks for a second helping. Levinson alludes to this when he writes: “[T]alk over dinner table illustrates the possibility of maintaining more than one action stream simultaneously: animated talk about some unrelated topic can fly over the business of passing plates, circulating condiments, and so on […]. The two streams may intrude upon one another […]” (Levinson 2013: 125).
From a conversation analytic perspective, the complex and flexible streams and the different levels of action and their coordination and the typical sequences realized during meals (e.g. offers and requests) are analyzed.; Das Pilotprojekt analysiert die Mikroorganisation der Interaktion an einem Esstisch.
Levinson spielt darauf an, wenn er schreibt: „[T]alk over dinner table illustrates the possibility of maintaining more than one action stream simultaneously: animated talk about some unrelated topic can fly over the business of passing plates, circulating condiments, and so on […]. The two streams may intrude upon one another […]“ (Levinson 2013: 125).
